PARTS OF SPEECH
Based on its function in the sentence, the word is divided into several types namely: nouns, adjectives, verbs, adverbs, pronouns, prepositions, conjunctions, articles, and interjections.
1. Nouns
Nouns are words that include the names of people, places, and things. Both abstract and concrete, both countable and uncountable.
This type of word has several functions in the sentence namely:
a) Subject
b) Object
c) Complement
d) Part of the possessive form
2. Verbs
This is the most important part of a speech, for without a verb, a sentence would not exist. Simply put, this is a word that shows an action (physical or mental) or state of being of the subject in a sentence. Verbs are divided into 2 namely:
a) Auxiliary verbs: to be, to have, to do, to go.
b) Ordinary verbs: to read, to write, to talk, to try.
3. Adjectives
Adjectives have only one job that is to describe nouns or pronouns. There are 6 types of adjectives namely:
a) Quality : clever, dry, fat, golden, good.
b) Demonstrative : this, that, these, those.
c) Distributive : each, every, either, neither.
d) Quantitative : some, any, no, little, few, many, much, one.
e) Interrogative : which, what, whose.
f) Possessive : my, your, his, her, its, our, your, their.
4. Adverbs
Adverbs have three different uses that is to describe verbs, adjectives, or other verbs. There are 6 types of adverbs namely:
a) Adverb of Manner : slowly, clearly.
b) Adverb of Place : under, beside, in.
c) Adverb of time : yesterday, now, next year.
d) Adverb of Frequency : always, never.
e) Adverb of Certainty : certainly, surely.
f) Adverb of Degree : rather, hardly.
5. Pronouns
Pronouns are words such as he, she, or it that take the place of nouns. There are 4 types of pronouns namely:
a) Personal pronouns : I, you, he, she, it, we, they.
b) Possessive pronouns : my, your, his, her, its, our, their.
c) Reflexive pronouns : myself, yourselves, themselves.
d) Relative pronouns : who, whose/of which, whom, which, and that.
6. Prepositions
Prepositions are words placed behind a noun or other word that indicates how the word relates to the previous word. Prepositions connect between nouns with nouns, nouns with adjectives, and nouns with verbs.
a) Preceded by adjectives: good at, fond of, proud of, pleased with, etc.
b) Preceded by nouns : arrival at, combination with, cooperation with, etc.
c) Preceded by verbs : agree to, apply for, borrow from, etc.
7. Conjunctions
Conjunctions are the word that connects an equivalent clause as well as a stratified clause. In general there are 2 types of conjunctions namely:
a) Coordinating conjunctions : and, either … or, neither … nor, both … and.
b) Subordination conjunctions : before, because, that, though, than.
8. Articles
Articles are the word that gives a marker of something that is certain (definite articles) and something uncertain (indefinite articles).
a) Indefinite articles : a/an
b) Definite articles : the
9. Interjections
Interjections are the word used to express the speaker's feelings. The word is of interest to the listener. In general, interjections are used to express 4 things:
a) Joy : hurrah! huzza!
b) Grief : alas!
c) Surprise : ha! what! wow!
d) Approval : bravo!
